One of the things I like to share with parents of kids who are leaving for college is to take the time to have a quick talk with your kids before they leave (or you drop them off). New college students will no doubt be experiencing lots of new things, but you don't want drugs or excessive alcohol to be among them.

As you and your young adult prepare for college, don't forget to talk about the importance of staying away from drugs and alcohol while they're away from home. Don't do so in an embarrassing way, but do talk to them. Remind them of the dangers that drug and alcohol abuse can bring, and encourage them to take part in school-sponsored extra-curricular activities or healthy hobbies that will keep them from feeling bored, lonely or home sick. And most importantly, remind them that you're there if they ever need to talk or need advice. Just because they're away from home doesn't mean they'll be without support!

We all want the best for our first-time college students, so as you dish out the safety tips and help them prepare, remember to do your part to keep them safe from drug and alcohol abuse!
