Parents, Are You Stressing Your Kids Out?

by SKHC Editor on December 21, 2010

The American Psychological Association (APA) recently released the results of a survey regarding stress in American children ages 8 to 17. Participants included 1,136 children of said ages and 1,134 adults. Check out these eye opening results.

Nearly 7 in 10 parents believe their stress has little or no impact on their children. On the flip side, 91% of the children said they are very aware of when their parents are under stress. Key signs children pointed out were yelling, arguing, complaining, or parents not spending as much time with them.

One in five children expressed they worry a lot about problems in their lives, however only 8% of parents reported their children were experiencing a lot of stress.

The APA notes that underestimating kids’ stress and failing to teach them early on how to manage it risks setting long-term behavioral patterns that could potentially harm their health.
